SABRES AGREE TO TERMS WITH MEYER, JONES, GEERTSEN

Sabres sign pair of defensemen, forward to two-way deals

The Buffalo Sabres announced today that the team has signed forward Carson Meyer and defenseman Mason Geertsen to two-year, two-way deals. In addition, the Sabres have agreed to terms with defenseman Zac Jones on a one-year, two-way contract for the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Meyer, 27, scored 21 points (9+12) in 29 games last season with the San Diego Gulls, the AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks. A native of Powell, Ohio, he’s tallied 131 points (65+66) across 201 AHL games with San Diego and Cleveland, where’s he spent a majority of his AHL career.

 

He split his four-year collegiate career between Miami University (Ohio) and Ohio State University, playing two years each for the RedHawks and Buckeyes. Prior to that, he won the Clark Cup as a member of the Tri-City Storm in his only full season in the United States Hockey League.

 

Meyer, a sixth-round draft pick by Columbus in 2017, has played 41 career NHL games, all as a member of the Blue Jackets.

Geertsen, 30, had five assists in 31 games last season with the Henderson Silver Knights (Vegas’ AHL affiliate) while playing primarily on defense. He’s a veteran of 447 career AHL games with Henderson, Utica, Hartford, Colorado, San Antonio, and Cleveland/Lake Erie.

 

Listed at 6-foot-4, 231 pounds, Geertsen brings a physical element to his game, having fought 64 times in his regular-season pro career. The veteran defenseman has also appeared in 25 career NHL games, all as a member of New Jersey in 2021-22.

 

A native of Drayton Valley, Alberta, he was originally a fourth-round selection (93rd overall) pick by Colorado in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Jones, 24, played a career-high 46 games last season for the New York Rangers. The left-shot defenseman has spent his entire five-year career in the Rangers organization, which drafted him drafted him during the third round in 2019.

 

Jones, a Richmond, Virginia, native, has skated in 115 NHL games for New York since 2020 in addition to 108 AHL games with the Hartford Wolf Pack, including two last season.

 

Prior to turning pro, Jones played two seasons at UMass-Amherst, where he was an All Hockey East Second Team All-Star and First Team All-USCHO selection, a CCM/AHCA East Second Team All-American in addition to being named to Hockey East and NCAA All-Tournament Teams. As a freshman, he was named to both the Hockey East and College Hockey News’ All-Rookie Teams after being the top scoring rookie defenseman in all of Hockey East with 23 points over 32 games.

 

He also played one season for the Tri-City Storm (USHL), earning USHL Rookie of the Year honors after amassing 52 points in 56 regular season games during the 2018-19 campaign. He also garnered USHL All-Rookie Team accolades as well as USHL Second All-Star Team honors.

 

Internationally, Jones has represented the United States on three occasions, most recently at the 2021 IIHF World Championship in Latvia, recording three assists in 10 games while helping the Americans to a bronze medal. He was also a member of Team USA at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship and won his only gold medal in 2018 at the World Junior A Challenge when he produced four points (1+3) in six games.
