RED RAIDERS PREVAIL FOR 7-6 WIN OVER STORM IN BACK-AND-FORTH TILT

For the next several months, the Rochester Americans will be front and center of the local high school hockey scene as part of a weekly series that features the latest news and notes, scores and stats of select Section V games around the Greater Rochester Area. 

 

The Fairport Red Raiders (4-5-1) prevailed for a 7-6 victory over the Greece Storm (3-9-1) in a back-and-forth tilt at Rochester Ice Center on Tuesday night.

 

With the victory, the Red Raiderswho have won two of its last three games, improved to 4-5-1 on the season overall while Greece falls to 3-9-1 while remaining winless over its previous four contests (0-3-1) dating back to Dec. 20.

 

Corey Rene, who was named Player of the Game, and Lucas Andreatta both tallied a pair of markers for Fairport while Jack Gosiewski (1+1), Carter Mitchell (1+0), and Liam O’Donnell (1+0) all found the back of the net. Jameson PierandriMarc HillierThomas Pane and Garrett Martin each chipped in an assist in the win. Cameron McClenin (2-1-0) and Dominic DiCiacclo (2-0-0) combined for 26 saves as they split the goaltending duties while DiCiaccio earned the victory.

 

James Wattie turned in a game-high four-point night as he logged a pair of goals to go with two assists while Gaborik Monks (1+2) and Nathan Bach (0+2) both registered multi-point games for Greece. Brandon DelaneyChase Benham, and Alex Rink all notched one goal whereas Wyatt Pilgrim collected one assist to close out the scoring. Goaltender Ryan Corey (0-3-0) stopped 37 of the 43 shots he faced but was dealt with the defeat in his fourth appearance of the campaign.

After seeing Fairport record the first seven shots of the contest, Wattie opened the scoring for Greece as he was setup by Pilgrim with 11:08 left in the first period.

 

Five minutes later though, the Red Raiders knotted the contest at one on Mitchell’s first varsity goal with Pierandri logging the only assist.

 

The final eight minutes of the opening stanza saw the two clubs combine six penalty minutes, but they went into the break tied at one.

 

Immediately after Rene gave Fairport its first lead of the game 1:02 into the second stanza, Wattie evened the score on a backhanded feed from Monks and Bach.

 

The Red Raiders tallied a pair to grab a 4-2 advantage on O’Donnell’s rebound goal and Gosiewski banked a shot off the post, but the Storm again made it a one-goal before the conclusion of the period on Monks’ marker.

 

Fairport used its power-play unit to restore its two-goal cushion as Andreatta capitalized on a long shift in the offensive zone with Martin logging the only assist at the 5:44 mark.

 

Trailing 5-3, Benham cut into the deficit for Greece as Bach won an offensive faceoff only to have Fairport responding immediately as they upped the lead less than a minute later on Rene’s unassisted tally.

 

Image (17).jpegThe two clubs traded penalties 30 seconds apart and as the Storm had the extra skater, Rink banged in a one-timer along the blueline from Rene with just under six minutes left in regulation.

 

To close out the scoring Andreatta scored into the vacant net for Fairport whereas Delaney put the final touches on the 7-6 score.

 

Fairport will look to even its record as they face Brighton/HFL/Eastridge/Gananda on FridayJan16 at the Genesee Valley for a 6:00 p.m. matchup. Greece meanwhile host Penfield Central at Lakeshore for an 8:00 p.m. contest on FridayJan. 16.
