HIGH SCHOOL GAME OF THE WEEK: SPARTANS VS. BRUINS
Jan 26, 2026For the next several months, the Rochester Americans will be front and center of the local high school hockey scene as part of a weekly series that features the latest news and notes, scores and stats of select Section V games around the Greater Rochester Area.
The High School Game of the Week includes Spartan Hockey (7-6-0) facing Brighton/HFL/Eastridge/Gananda (2-11-1) on Tuesday, January 27 for a 5:00 p.m. puck drop at Genesee Valley.
The Spartans enter Tuesday with the second-fewest goals scored amongst all Section V teams despite a winning record. The club has been in each of their 13 games this season while keeping within at least two goals against their opponent except for an 8-1 victory back on Dec. 5 against West Seneca East.
The Spartans also logged a 3-1 win over the Bruins on Dec. 16, which also was at Genesee Valley Park. After a scoreless two period of regulation, the Spartans, who outshot the Bruins by a 50-22 margin, scored three times in the first five minutes of the third stanza before Brighton/HFL/Eastridge/Gananda notched a goal to cap the 3-1 score.
Through 13 games this season, 10 different Spartan skaters have found the back of the net while 14 have notched at least one point.
Nick Maslowski tops all Spartans in goals (11), assists (11) and points (22) while Wyatt Flannery (12) and Matt Turner (10) both have reached double figures in points. Colin Mancuso (5), AJ Parker (3), Zach Fennell (2), Evan Stewart (2), and Turner (2) all have multiple goals this season.
Goaltender Evan Farrell has handled nearly all the goaltending duties as he shows a 6-4-0 mark in 10 appearances whereas Blake Goldberg (1-2-0) has skated in three games, making 83 saves. Jacob Edick has yet to make his season debut.
Joe Jehlen is the head coach of Spartan Hockey while Brian Kleemann and Glenn Pittman are serving as assistants. Cam Kuzniar is the goalie coach whereas Darren Crane and Kari Van Allen are the athletic trainers.
After posting two wins of their first three games to begin the calendar year, Brighton/HFL/Eastridge/Gananda come into Tuesday’s matchup on a four-game losing skid that has seen them been outscored 35-2. On the season overall, the Bruins have the fewest goals for and allowed the most goals in all the section through 14 games.
Both Bruins’ victories in 2025-26 have come while they have been serving as the home team, which included a 4-1 and 2-1 score.
Patrick Rohr leads the Bruins in goals (6) and points (9) while Jason Bennett (5), Ethan Flannery (4), Nathan Loncz (3), Ivan Seablom (3), Brayden Stapf (2), and Robert Jank (2) each have multiple points. Bennett tops all skaters in assists (4) whereas Loncz (3) is the only other Bruin with three or more goals except for Rohr.
Goaltender Jacob Kleinberg (2-11-1) has seen time in each of the 14 games this season whereas Jackson Tschiderer (5) and Matt Dyer (2) have combined for seven appearances.
Head coach Grady Monks is the head coach of Brighton/HFL/Eastridge/Gananda while Matthew Brassie and Brad Ryan are assistants.
