One consistent attribute has stood out during each practice of Buffalo Sabres Development Camp: size.
All 11 defensemen on the roster are listed at 6-foot-1 or taller, including four blueliners over 6-foot-4. The position group is quickly becoming a strength for the organization, with a deep pool of players in the system.
Rochester Americans assistant coach Nathan Paetsch has been in charge of the defensive prospects throughout the week. While the former Sabre admits his initial impression of the D core was focused on their height, he’s been more impressed with their skills on the ice.
The trio of Gavin McCarthy, Radim Mrtka, and Maxim Strbak is putting in the work to be ready for their first full season in the AHL. Like most young defensemen transitioning to the pro game, getting stronger has been the top priority for the offseason.
Another player who has made a lasting impression is Daxon Rudolph. This year’s fourth overall selection has showcased his puck-moving skills, elite hockey IQ, and maturity as an 18-year old. Rudolph has spent plenty of time in Western New York over the last six weeks, mentioning in his press conference on Monday how unique it is to be in Buffalo for the NHL Draft Combine, NHL Draft, and his first development camp.
Development camp is also a unique experience for coaches like Paetsch to connect with the players on a personal level. Following the strenuous workouts, on-ice sessions, and meetings, the Sabres organization has prioritized fun activities for the group to participate in. Players and coaches took a quick trip to Orchard Park Tuesday evening to tour the Buffalo Bills' brand-new Highmark Stadium ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
