TISCHKE PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF LAST SEASON

Going into the 2022-23 campaign, Rochester Americans defenseman Peter Tischke is looking for that full-time spot in the American Hockey League this season. That work began this past week as Tischke took part in Buffalo Sabres training camp, an opportunity that allowed him to get in ample work with old teammates and new.

“There was a high compete level out there,” stated Tischke, who was among the 21 players reassigned to Rochester by the Sabres over the weekend. “I think it's nice for everybody to get back playing competitive hockey again and get back with the guys, get the routine down again and just get the chemistry going. So, I think it's been fun, and it's been nice to get back on the ice.”

On July 14, Tischke re-signed a one-year AHL contract for the 2022-23 season with Rochester, and a big part of his return was solely the culture that the Sabres have created throughout the organization over the last two years.

“You're going to have to go through different chemistry changes throughout the year no matter who you're on the line with or who your D partner is,” commented the Amerks defenseman when asked if the camaraderie seems to have picked up right where it left off from last season.

Tischke then continued with, “All the new guys have been great. I've met all of them. They're unreal guys. I think they're going to get along with the team great.  So, I mean, it's been nice in the guys that we had last year too because we were obviously really close, and everybody loves each other.”

In 2021-22, Tischke split time between the Amerks and Cincinnati Cyclones. Although he was only with Cincinnati for five games at the beginning of the 2021-22 campaign, Tischke needed that time in the ECHL to better himself come his time in Rochester.

With Rochester, Tischke appeared in an AHL career-high of 33 games and posted four points with 35 penalty minutes. The blueliner did face some injuries throughout the course of the year, including one that had him out for the end of the regular season but saw him return during the Amerks postseason push.

Those eight games for Tischke in the 2022 Calder Cup playoffs were his first of the postseason variety in the pros and critical towards his development in the league. Despite not tallying any points, Tischke played a physical role for the Amerks blue line in the postseason, registering 15 penalty minutes.

That small sample size of physicality and playoff highs are all the motivation Tischke needs headed into this season to try and earn his spot in Rochester and kick off the year right where he left off.

“I’m expecting to pick up where I left off last year and playoffs. Hopefully I’ll stay healthy this year and we’ll see where it goes from there.”
