Richard recorded two assists, McDonough scores game-winnr in 3-1 win over Marlies
Sep 26, 2026A pair of third-period tallies and two assists from rookie Jake Richard helped the Rochester Americans to a 3-1 victory over the defending Calder Cup Champion Toronto Marlies Saturday evening at LECOM HarborCenter in downtown Buffalo.

The victory served as Rochester’s lone preseason contest before the two North Division foes kick-off the 2026-27 regular season on Friday, Oct. 2 at Blue Cross Arena.
Richard, who made his pro debut, recorded two primary assists while Red Savage and Aidan McDonough, who donned the Amerks’ crest for the first time, each logged a goal in the win. First-year defensemen Maxim Štrbák and Radim Mrtka each added an assist while Zac Funk closed out the scoring with an unassisted, shorthanded goal.
Goaltender Matthew Villalta (0-1-0) made his Amerks debut, stopping 20 of 21 shots he faced to earn the win. The veteran netminder stopped carried a shutout into the third period, making all 16 saves he faced through the first 40 minutes of play.
Frank Djurasevic plotted Toronto’s lone goal from Matt Anderson and Brandon Burh during the third period. Samuel Hlavaj and Ken Appleby split the goaltending duties for the Marlies, compiling 20 saves. Hlavaj drew the start in-between the pipes while Appleby took the loss.
