HIGH SCHOOL GAME OF THE WEEK: PENFIELD VS. GATES-CHILI

For the last several weeks, the Rochester Americans have once again been front and center on local high school hockey scene as part of a weekly series that features the latest news and notes, scores and stats of select Section V games around the Greater Rochester Area. 

 

TEAM ROSTERS

 

This week’s High School Game of the Week features the Penfield Patriots (10-4-0) hosting Spartan Hockey (6-6-2) of Gates-Chili tonight at 7:00 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena.

 

The Patriots, who are one of four teams in MCPSAC to record 10 wins and at least 20 points, have recorded four consecutive victories since dropping a 4-2 score to McQuaid Jesuit back on Jan. 13. Penfield has outscored its opponents 18-4 since the defeat and have tallied seven goals in each of its last two contests.

 

Despite Sean Walsh (15) and Bobby Kane (10) being the only two Patriots in double digits in goals, eight have logged at least 10 points. Along with Walsh’s team-high 19 assists and 34 points, Angelo Latore, Mason Maksymiu, Thomas Obstarcyk, Travis Bush, Corey Weiss and Rory Gately completes the list to record multi-points through 14 games.

 

Thomas Herman (10-4-0) has handled nearly all the goaltending duties for the Patriots while also making 316 saves and posting one shutout. Herman is one of 13 netminders to post a shutout and is second in the county in wins. Christian Brown (0-0-0) has made five saves in one appearance while Emmett Muroski has not made his season debut.

 

Penfield is led by head coach Nathan Miller and assistant coaches Jordan Ramano, Todd Conrow, James Sergeant.

 

Spartan Hockey is aiming for back-to-back wins for the first time this season after posting a 5-2 win this past Friday night against Irondequoit. The club holds a 5-2-1 mark when serving as the home team compared to a 1-4-1 record on the road.

 

Of the 22 players on Spartan Hockey’s roster, 13 have scored at least one goal while 16 have posted a point or more through the first 14 games of the 2023-24 campaign. Their five home wins are tied for most in the MCPSAC.

 

Parker Monette tops the program in both goals (7) and points (14) while Matt Turner has a team-high nine assists. Ethan Hallock (11), Nolan Jeroy (10), and Braylon Agnello (10) all have reached double figures in points.

 

Goaltender Logan Swartzenberg boasts a 5-0-0 record to go with a 1.88 goals-against average through his first six appearances. Grady Emo (1-6-2) has also seen time in the crease, appearing in nine games. Jaxstin Bingham and Tyler Harrington are active netminders on the roster but have yet to make their season-debuts.

 

Spartan Hockey is led by head coach Joe Jehlen and assistant coaches Brian Kleemann and Glenn Pittman.

 

Following Monday’s matchup, Penfield will host Adirondack on Friday, Jan. 26 at Webster Ice Arena at 6:00 p.m. while Spartan Hockey faces Adirondack at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Genesee Valley.
