The Rochester Americans (3-2-0-1) return to Blue Cross Arena for their first home game in nearly two weeks, welcoming in the intrastate rival Utica Comets (3-1-0-0). Wednesday’s matchup marks the first midweek game for the Amerks, and the team looks to replicate the success that they’ve had through two home games so far this season. Coverage begins at 7:00 p.m. on WGR Rochester and AHLTV on FloHockey before puck drop at 7:05 p.m.

Tonight’s meeting is the second of 10 between the Comets and Amerks, as Utica defeated Rochester 2-1 back on Oct. 10 during the team’s home opener. Captain Matthew Peca cut the deficit in half for the Amerks, but Utica held strong in the third period to walk away victorious.
The two teams will meet two more times before the end of the calendar year on Saturday, Nov. 7 and Monday, Dec. 21. The Comets come into Wednesday playing the fewest games in the AHL and were the last remaining unbeaten squad until a 4-0 loss in Laval last time out.
Here is everything you need to know heading into tonight’s game:
HUMP DAY HOCKEY!
While there haven’t been any Wednesday games for the Amerks up to this point, they’re going to get used to them quickly on the schedule. Beginning today, Rochester will play three consecutive weeks on Wednesday, with all of them being at home. Even though the Amerks had a perfect record in October during midweek matchups last season, Rochester was 7-10-1-1 during the 2025-26 campaign on Wednesdays.
Head Coach Michael Leone wants his group to capitalize on these opportunities not only for additional points in a crowded North Division, but also to provide additional momentum heading into the weekend slate of games.
Not necessarily a midweek stat, but Utica is 4-0-1 all-time when playing on Oct. 21, including a 2-0-0-0 record against Rochester. Even though it was on a Saturday in 2017, the Comets did earn a 5-1 win at Blue Cross Arena the last time these New York state foes met on this date.

NOT ENOUGH IN THE TANK
Following the Amerks first road win in Hamilton last Friday amid a three-game road swing, Rochester couldn’t capitalize on its early lead in Syracuse on Saturday. Two special teams’ goals from Aidan McDonough (the team’s first shorthanded marker of the year) and Peca built a two-goal cushion through 20 minutes. The Crunch came out as a different group in the second period, tilting ice in their favor and netting four consecutive goals to snap a three-game losing streak and steal the win away from Rochester.
While very unfortunate to let a two-goal cushion evaporate like that, Syracuse was also the team coming in with over a week of rest and playing incredibly desperate after being outscored 16-4 during the Crunch slump. Keep an eye out for how the Amerks continue to close out games though, as the group has the best goal differential in the league during the first period (7-1), but shifts more to a coin flip in the final 40 minutes (second period 8-6 and third period 4-4).
DOMINANT DEFENSE
It wouldn’t be shocking if Wednesday showcased another hard-fought defensive battle like the 2-1 outcome that we saw against Utica earlier this month.
Both teams are tied for fourth in the AHL, allowing opponents to average just two goals per game. The Amerks have proven they can be a high-scoring offense but have struggled to get consistent looks on net against physical, defensive-minded systems. In the recent loss to Syracuse, Rocester generated just 17 shots on goal and only three in the third period that included a four-minute power-play.
On the other side for the Comets, they don’t seem too interested in lighting the lamp. They’ve scored just eight goals in their four games, winning back-to-back one-goal games against Providence and Rochester. Head Coach Ryan Parent wants his offense to give them a chance with a multi-goal effort and feels confident that the backend can talk care of the rest to rack up wins this year.
