FIVE UNANSWERED GOALS PROPELS PENFIELD TO 5-2 WIN OVER PITTSFORD

Dec 22, 2021

The Penfield Patriots overcame a 2-0 first-period deficit and scored five straight unanswered goals to coast to a 5-2 win over the Pittsford Panthers in a battle of the reigning Section V champions Tuesday at Webster Ice Arena.

GAME SUMMARY

Senior forward and leading point-getter Sean Smith factored in on each of Penfield’s final three goals, scoring twice – including the eventual game-winner – before adding an assist to lead the Patriots to their fifth win of the season. Defenseman Owen Fox notched three assists, his third multi-point outing in four games, while Sam Smock scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season to go along with an assist.

Goaltender Dom Andrade made 22 saves to improve to 4-1-1 on the season.

Lucas Procious and Henok Hankinson provided the scoring for Pittsford behind a 37-save effort from goaltender Aden Brown. Leading point-getter Will Masaschi recorded an assist on each goal to extend his point streak to three games.

The teams combined for five goals in the opening frame with Pittsford needing just 95 seconds after the opening face-off to take a 1-0 lead on the power-play. After Penfield’s Jacob Weiss was whistled for tripping 10 seconds in, Masaschi found Procious for the latter’s fifth goal of the season.

Hankinson doubled the Panthers’ lead at 7:44 off another set-up from Masaschi, but a quick response from Penfield’s Sean Walsh 23 seconds later would trim the deficit in half and ignite a five-goal run for the Patriots.

Penfield took over from there, scoring twice more in a span of 1:17 on the strength of back-to-back goals from Kelly Makysmiu and Smith to take a 3-2 lead into the intermission.

Smith added his second of the game midway through the middle frame and Smock sealed the 5-2 win for Penfield with a second to spare in regulation.

Both teams are in action again on Thursday, Dec. 23 in their final games prior to the annual Christmas break as Penfield plays host to Webster Schroeder while Pittsford goes up against Batavia Notre Dame United.
