A BITTERSWEET FIRST PRO HAT TRICK FOR MASON JOBST

On Saturday against the Toronto Marlies, we saw Rochester Americans forward Mason Jobst produce his first professional hat trick to help keep the Amerks in the game.

“Sometimes I guess the puck just bounces your way. I was getting some lucky breaks,” said Jobst after Friday’s game against the Marlies, “but it was nice to get my first hat trick, for sure.”

Unfortunately, casting a shadow over Jobst’s phenomenal offensive production on Saturday was a late third-period comeback by the Marlies, who scored three times over the final four minutes, including the go-ahead goal with nine seconds remaining to escape with a 7-5 win.

A deflating loss that diminished an otherwise exciting accomplishment for the fourth-year pro.

“He (Jobst) was excellent,” said Amerks head coach Seth Appert when asked about Jobst’s first pro hat trick. “He didn't have his best defensive game on Saturday, which…I'm more bummed out for him because it was such a special offensive game and a real coming out party for him in that way. You'd like it to have been more of a special night that we win, and he's his normal defensive self, but I think he'll take the confidence from the offense and he's been consistently good defensively, so he'll clean that up.”

However, Jobst has been a steady, under-the-radar presence for Rochester this season.

Jobst has centered almost every line and proceeds to produce whether on the first or the bottom line on any given night. Through 29 games this season, the second-year Amerk has already surpassed his career-highs in goals, with six, and points, with 17.

“He competes really hard and he's got a really good hands,” continued Appert when discussing Jobst’s upward trajectory in offensive production this season. “In terms of the work every day to get better – he spends extra time in the shooting room, and he spends extra time on the ice.”

Appert also refers to Jobst as a “Swiss Army Knife” due to his ability to play on any given line, on any given day at the drop of the dime, affirming Jobst has great camaraderie and communication with all of his teammates.

Last season we saw Jobst split the campaign between the Amerks and the San Jose Barracuda, the American Hockey League affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, where he produced a combined 15 points in 37 total games. After posting four goals, nine assists and 13 points in 26 games with the Rochester, Jobst was traded to San Jose on Mar. 28, where he went on to tally two points in 11 contests to close out the 2021-22 campaign.

This past August, Jobst signed another one-year AHL contract with Rochester because this was the place where he felt wanted and genuinely enjoyed his time. It’s exactly where the fourth-year pro is supposed to be as he continues to grow his offensive skillset under the helm of Appert and staff.

Looks like Jobst is continuing his upward trajectory just fine, after all, he did just notch his first professional hat trick against the first-place team in the North Division. Not an easy feat.

Congratulations, ‘Jabbo’.
