Rochester Americans General Manager Stacy Roest announced today that Philip Samuelsson has been named an assistant coach on the staff of head coach Michael Leone.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Philip to our staff in Rochester,” said Roest. “His experience as a player is going to translate well into his coaching and he’s going to be someone our young prospects will have the benefit of learning from. He’s a fantastic addition to the organization.”

Samuelsson rounds out a coaching staff that also includes new incoming assistant coach Scott Moser and goaltending coach Neil Conway, who joined the organization last month.

“I am so excited to be a part of the Amerks,” said Samuelsson. “I look forward to learning from both Michael and Scott as I transition out of playing. I want to work as hard as I can to ensure that I am doing everything that I can to help maximize these players’ potential. I’m grateful to Stacy and Michael for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to getting to work in the coming weeks.”

Samuelsson embarks on his coaching career after recently wrapping up a 15-year professional playing career as a defenseman with nearly 900 games split between North America and Europe. He spent the last seven seasons playing overseas in Czechia, Sweden, Germany and Italy, including 155 games in Sweden’s top-tier league. During his time abroad, Samuelsson served as captain of the Bremerhaven Penguins (DEL) for the 2022-23 campaign.

Prior to continuing his career abroad, the Leksand, Sweden, native played parts of eight seasons in the American Hockey League, totaling 151 points (27+124) and 354 penalty minutes over 512 career games with Lehigh Valley, Charlotte, St. John’s, Springfield, Portland and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He also added 12 points (3+9) in 51 playoff contests, including 33 with the Penguins.

Samuelsson, who is the son of two-time Stanley Cup winner Ulf Samuelsson, was originally a second-round selection (61st overall) of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2009 NHL Draft.
