We didn’t know it then, but February sadly brought us the last full month of the 2019-20 regular season for the Rochester Americans prior to that Wednesday night in March before the sports world came to a halt. The month was highlighted by the final two wins of a season-long six-game win streak that carried over from January, five overtime matchups, win number 30 and more. Here are the Amerks’ top five moments from the month of February.
1. STARTING IT OFF WITH SIX STRAIGHT
The Amerks headed into February on a high note as they took their four-game win streak from January and extended it through the first two games of February.
From Jan. 22 to Feb. 5, the Amerks went on a roll, collecting all 12 points over their season-long six-game win streak. Over that six-game span, Rochester outscored its opponents 22-12 and went beyond regulation just once while all the matchups were against divisional opponents.
2. FEBRUARY ACTUALLY STANDS FOR FREE HOCKEY
Speaking of that win streak that the Amerks embarked on, the first contest of the six-game span marked one of 17 tilts that were decided beyond regulation for Rochester this season.
But before we dive further into that, February marked only the second time this season that the Amerks have seen five overtime matchups in just a one-month span. During the first month of the 2019-20 campaign, Rochester saw the extra period five times, beginning with its season opener on Oct. 4, and earned the victory in three of those overtime matchups.
February saw a little bit of a different story as the Amerks had 14 games and seven of those were played at The Blue Cross Arena. Of those 14 games overall, five of them went into overtime with the Amerks coming away with a win in two of the tilts. Also, four happened during Rochester’s season-long six-game homestand.
3. HOME IS WHERE THE…OVERTIME IS?
What’s even more impressive than Rochester taking on those 17 overtime contests so far this season? Well, 11 have happened right here in Rochester, including four in the month of February alone.
Now despite the Amerks’ overtime record at home being just 3-8, it’s good to note that those 11 games were opportunities that enabled the club to pick up points and maintain a playoff position prior to the cancellation of the remainder of the season.
Conversely, on the road, the Amerks fared much better when offered the extra session as they boasted a 5-1 record against opponents in overtime action.
Lastly, there were six different occasions this season in which Rochester was pushed to overtime during the final minute of regulation, finishing the year with a 3-3 record as a result. Within those six games, there were four times that an Amerks player notched that last-minute marker to force the extra frame.
4. WIN NO. 30
On Friday, Feb. 21, the Amerks notched a 3-2 overtime victory over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, giving Rochester its fourth straight season with at least 30 or more wins.
5. TAYLOR JOINS ELITE COMPANY
As the Amerks reached that 30-win mark for the fourth year in a row, it was also the team’s third straight under head coach Chris Taylor. Taylor became the first Amerks head coach since Randy Cunneyworth, the all-time winningest coach in franchise history, to lead his team to 30 or more wins in each of his first three seasons behind the bench.
