LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT IN ALBANY AS AMERKS DROP 4-2 DECISION

A late rally in the third period by the Rochester Americans fell short, and the Amerks dropped a 4-2 decision to the Albany Devils at the Times Union Center on Sunday.  Trailing 3-0 in the third, Rochester battled back, scoring twice in the final five minutes of the period to pull within one goal, but the Devils added an empty-netter to seal the victory.

Marcus Foligno and Drew Schiestel scored the Amerks goals, while Alex Biega, Shaone Morrisonn, Colin Stuart and Jacob Lagace each collected an assist.  Morrisonn now has five points (2+3) in the last five games and Biega has four assists in the last five outings.

Drew MacIntyre, making his second straight start in goal for the Amerks, stopped 33 of 36 shots in the game, including 19 in the second period.  The loss was the third straight for the Amerks, who finished off their first of three consecutive three-game weekends this month.

Albany was led by forward Matt Anderson, who tallied a goal and two assists.  Forward Stephane Veilluex and defenseman Matt Taormina each added a goal and one assist in the win.

The Devils opened the scoring late in the first period with a power play goal by Taormina.  The Albany defenseman gained control of the puck at the blue line and faked a shot to avoid a diving Amerks defender, then glided toward the center of the ice and unleashed a slap shot that found its way through traffic and past MacIntyre.  Anderson and Eric Gelinas picked up the assists on the game’s first goal.

While the second period saw no scoring but plenty of chances, the third period opened with Albany extending its lead to 2-0 on a goal by Joe Sova, who took a pass from Anderson and one-timed it through a screen and past MacIntyre.  Mike Sislo also picked up an assist on the goal.

Less than five minutes later, Veilleux made it a 3-0 game when he finished off a 3-on-2 with Brad Mills and Peter Harrold, who were each credited with an assist on the goal.

Foligno got Rochester on the board with under five minutes to go in the game when he scored his eighth goal of the season, getting a piece of a point shot by Biega.  Morrisonn also got credit for an assist on the play after feeding Biega for the shot.  Foligno’s eight goals tie him with Stuart for second-most on the team.

The Amerks drew even closer minutes later when Schiestel scored his first goal of the season to make it a 3-2 game.  With MacIntyre on the bench in favor of an extra attacker, Rochester applied heavy pressure in the Albany zone, eventually leading to Schiestel’s goal.  Stuart, who was playing in his 500th career professional game, and Lagace each collected an assist on the play.

After the ensuing face-off, Rochester pulled MacIntyre again and continued its attempt to tie the game, but Albany was able to seal it when Anderson scored an empty-net goal for his third point of the contest.

The same two teams will meet again next Friday, Dec. 9 at The Blue Cross Arena in Rochester at 7:35 p.m.  It will be the next game for each team and will be broadcast live on 107.3 FM and 1280 AM, Rochester’s Sports Talk.
