The date was May 19, 1983 and the Rochester Americans just completed their four-game sweep over the Maine Mariners with a 3-1 victory in Game 4 of the Finals to capture their fourth Calder Cup championship. Led by Mal Davis and Bob Mongrain, the Amerks dispatched the Binghamton Rangers four games to one in the first round before knocking off the New Haven Nighthawks in seven games to advance to the Calder Cup Finals. After earning back-to-back wins at home to take a 2-0 series lead, Rochester won its next two in Maine to win its third straight championship on the road.

During the regular season, Amerks Hall of Famer Geordie Robertson had the best season of his 10-year professional career, scoring a career-best 46 goals, 73 assists and 119 points and establishing single-season individual records along the way. In addition to leading the Amerks in every offensive category, Robertson set franchise records for most assists (73) and points (119) in a single season, along with the most assists and points scored by a centerman – all of which is still intact today.
