FOLIGNO, FLYNN HELP TEAM BLUE TO 6-1 WIN OVER TEAM WHITENews | 10/2/2012 4:41:20 PM | Warren Kosel
The Rochester Americans’ 2012 Training Camp continued today at the downtown Blue Cross Arena as Day 5 featured the highly anticipated Blue-White intrasquad scrimmage in what turned out to be the final tune-up before the Amerks open their preseason slate on Wednesday night against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
The 34 players were divided up into two teams and put their skills on display for 40 minutes before rounding out the day with a special teams-specific session that saw the groups alternate on the power-play and penalty kill.
Led by a pair of goals from both Marcus Foligno and Brian Flynn, Team Blue erupted for five unanswered goals and ultimately cruised to a 6-1 win over their Team White counterparts. Mark Mancari also contributed a pair of assists while Luke Adam provided the lone tally for Team White.
The Blue squad built a 3-0 lead in the early stages of the first half, beginning with Foligno’s first goal of the game when he darted through the White defense and beat goaltender Connor Knapp with a nifty move to his backhand.
Defenseman Drew Schiestel gave Blue a two-goal cushion after converting on his penalty shot opportunity moments later with a perfectly placed shot under the cross bar.
Phil Varone, Rochester’s top point-getter in 2011-12, then increased Blue’s lead by three after jumping on Evan Rankin’s rebound and sending it past former RIT netminder Shane Madolora to put his team up by a hat trick at the half.
Blue continued its onslaught as Flynn made it a 4-0 game with a tremendous individual effort to start the second half. Entering the White zone on the left wing side, Flynn zipped by his defender at the near faceoff dot and tucked the puck just inside the post on the short-side for his first goal of the game.
Minutes later, the duo of Mancari and Foligno struck again as the former AHL All-Star connected with Rochester’s reining Rookie of the Year to give Blue a commanding 5-0 lead.
After several quality scoring chances, Team White finally broke its scoreless streak in the latter stages of the contest as Nick Crawford found Adam all alone in the high slot with a pass from the right corner. Adam, left uncontested, finished the play by beating rookie goaltender Nathan Lieuwen with a shot from the top of the left circle to cut Blue’s lead to 5-1.
Blue wouldn’t falter, however, and would soon regain its five-goal advantage as Flynn’s shot through traffic appeared to carom off a White defenseman before trickling through the legs of Madolora.
The Amerks’ preseason opener is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 3 when the Amerks host the Penguins in the first of back-to-back tilts at The Sports Centre at MCC in Rochester at 7:05 p.m. The home-and-home series will shift back to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Friday, Oct. 5 with a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
