The 2011-12 Rochester Americans’ season was filled with great moments – highlight reel goals, Hall of Fame inductions, unforgettable nights at The Blue Cross Arena and memorable events in the community. As a way of taking a final look back at the season, the Amerks selected 16 moments from the past year and asked our fans to vote for their favorite.

The last two plays standing were A1C Jerry Cappon, a Rochester native and member of the US Air Force, surprising his family during a game, and a game-winning goal by Luke Adam in the final game of the regular season that ultimately clinched a playoff berth for the Amerks.

Nearly 800 fans voted on the final matchup, and A1C Cappon's visit was the winner.  Stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, Cappon and his two sisters worked with the Amerks to plan the surprise for their parents, who were completely unaware that Jerry was back in Rochester, during a Jan. 14 game against the Hamilton Bulldogs.  Following the game, Jerry visited the Amerks locker room to meet the players, including Phil Varone, with whom he had previously exchanged messages on Twitter while stationed in Germany.

Here is that special moment, which has been selected by Amerks fans as the best of the 2011-12 season:
