The Buffalo Sabres selected six prospects on Day Two of the NHL Entry Draft to complete its 2012 draft class. Buffalo made picks in rounds two, three, five, six and selected twice in round seven to add three forwards, two defensemen and a goalie to its roster of future players.
Jake McCabe (6'0", 203 lbs., 10/12/93), a defenseman, was the Sabres' second-round selection and the 44th overall pick in the draft. The Eau Claire, Wis. native played for the University of Wisconsin in 2011-12, collecting 12 points (3+9) and 12 PIM through 26 games with the Badgers.
In the third round, the Sabres selected center Justin Kea (6’4”, 212 lbs., 2/7/94) with the 73rd overall pick. Kea, a Port Perry, Ont. Native, has played for the Saginaw Spirit (OHL) for two seasons, totaling 20 points (7+13) and 127 PIM through 127 games.
Buffalo selected another center, Logan Nelson (6’1”, 180 lbs., 9/9/93), in the fifth round with the 133rd overall selection. Nelson, a native of Coon Rapids, Min., played with the Victoria Royals of the WHL in 2011-12, tallying 62 points (23+39) in 71 regular season games.
In the sixth round, Buffalo selected Swedish goaltender Linus Ullmark (6’3”, 198 lbs., 7/31/93) with the 163rd overall pick. Ullmark has played with the Modo Jr. team in Sweden for the past two seasons.
The Sabres rounded out their draft class with two picks in the seventh and final round of the Entry Draft. Buffalo selected defenseman Brady Austin (6’4”, 234 lbs., 6/16/93) from the Bellevile Bulls (OHL) with the 193rd overall pick and, with the 204th overall pick, the Sabres selected high-schooler Judd Peterson (6’0”, 194 lbs., 9/27/93) from Duluth Min.
On Day One of the Entry Draft, the Sabres selected centers Mikhail Grigorenko (Quebec - QMJHL) and Zemgus Girgensons (Dubuque - USHL) with their picks in the first round of the draft. Grigorenko, the third-ranked North American skater and top North American center on NHL Central Scouting's final rankings, was selected with the 12th overall pick. Girgenson was chosen by the Sabres with the 14th overall pick after acquiring the selection from Calgary in exchange for the 21st overall pick in the draft, acquired from Calgary during last year's draft, and the 42nd overall pick.
